The Charleston
A Vernacular Jazz dance that was wildly popular in the early 1900s, and evolved into Lindy Hop's swingout. Characterized by outward heel kicks combined with an up-and-down movement achieved by bending and straightening the knees of ragtime jazz. As early as 1903, the dance made its way into stage shows by 1913. The dance expresses the reckless daring, abandon, and restlessness of the jazz-age of flappers and the original pin-striped gangsters, soon became the rage throughout the United States.
