Collegiate Shag was popular in the early 1920's and predates Lindy Hop. While parents wanted their children to learn Ballroom and other partner dances, but the younger generation didn’t want to learn the stuffy structured dance. They decided to learn to dance but to make it as crazy as possible. This style was very popular with the college kids all across the United States, and Collegiate Shag was born.
This is a great dance for fast music and is often used to provide a rest period during long up tempo songs. Similar to the patterns of the Jitterbug.
Collegiate Shag has a very close hold, and it is therefore a very compact dance, making it well suited for crowded dance floors. Collegiate Shag can be anything you want it to be, and that’s the fun of it.
